The complete blood count also reports indices like mean corpuscular hemoglobin, which describes the average amount of hemoglobin packed into each cell and helps pinpoint the type of anemia.

Your white blood cells are your immune army. A white blood cell count that runs high can suggest infection or inflammation, while a very abnormal count occasionally points toward a blood cancer such as leukemia, though that is rare and never diagnosed on a blood count alone. Platelets, the third component, help your blood form a clot when you are injured, so they matter for blood clotting and bleeding risk.

The Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

The comprehensive metabolic panel, or CMP, is the second pillar of most lab tests. Where the blood count looks at cells, this blood test looks at chemistry. It measures your blood sugar, kidney markers, electrolytes, and liver enzymes all at once, and it is one of the lab tests you are most likely to see on any routine order.

Blood glucose sits near the top of the panel. A fasting blood glucose test screens for diabetes and prediabetes, and consistently high levels are one of the earliest warning signs that your metabolism needs attention. Watching your blood sugar levels over time is far more useful than reading a single result in isolation.

Kidney function shows up as blood urea nitrogen and creatinine, two waste products your kidneys filter out. The same panel includes liver function tests, which are really blood enzyme tests measuring proteins your liver releases when it is stressed or inflamed. Abnormal levels here do not always mean disease, but they are a signal worth exploring rather than ignoring.

Cholesterol, Thyroid, and Beyond

A lipid panel reports your cholesterol levels, breaking total cholesterol into the components that raise or lower cardiovascular risk. These lab values are central to understanding heart health, even in people who feel perfectly well.

Thyroid function tests measure the hormones that control your metabolism, energy, and mood. This is often the missing piece for patients who feel exhausted despite a clean CBC and metabolic panel, because thyroid trouble hides easily inside an otherwise normal range.

Some blood tests are more specialized. A tumor marker test measures a biomarker linked to certain cancers and is used mostly to monitor known conditions rather than to screen healthy people. Blood clotting tests, such as those measuring how quickly you form a clot, assess your bleeding and clot risk and matter before surgery or when a blood clot is suspected. An arterial blood gas is a hospital-based test that checks the oxygen and acid balance in your blood, and you are unlikely to see it in routine wellness panels.
